Dear Colleague
All of us were saddened I am sure by the sudden death last week of Councillor John Robert Jones. Although I only met him on a limited number of occasions he struck me as a man deeply rooted in his community who fulfilled an important role on Gwynedd Council and who commanded respect from across the political spectrum on the council. I am sure that our thoughts go out to his family at this difficult time. He will also be sadly missed by our colleagues in Arfon Lib Dems.
Preparations for the Assembly election will start in earnest this week when the nomination forms for the various constituencies and the regional list will be submitted. Much of our efforts over the past few weeks have centred on the preparation of the regional budget and organising the various freepost arrangements across the region. We have designed a generic regional leaflet for use in the various wards which we shall be defending in May 2012 and I shall be contacting our councillors over the next few days to arrange for the regional team to visit to canvass and leaflet.
I have already held hustings at the north Wales level with the Royal Institute for Chartered Surveyors and the Royal College of Nursing and further meetings have been arranged involving the Federation for Small Businesses, Confederation of British Industry, North Wales Multiple Sclerosis Society amongst others. I know that our constituency candidates are also busy in the coming weeks and many have already held school hustings and one organised by the housing associations.
I'm looking forward to attending Mike Priestley's campaign in Aberconwy this week and I remain quietly confident of our position given the excellent range of both constituency and list candidates at this election. We all know that the steps that are having to be taken by the Uk Coalition Government mean that ours is not an easy task in this election but I think the evidence from those constituencies where we are canvassing and talking to people is that where we take the time to explain our stance our vote is holding up well.
I have already recorded the Party Political Broadcast for S4C and I shall be appearing on the Pawb a'i Farn programme on S4C on Thursday evening.
My real hope, however, is that I can visit all the constituencies over the course of the campaign but I would really welcome any suggestions that you have for your particular area and invitations to join you in the campaign,
One thing is for sure- Wales cannot afford another five years of Labour and Plaid given what's happening to our health and education systems. Let's make sure that we wake up on May 6th with the Welsh Lib Dems defeating all the sceptics and taking a stronger role in the next Assembly.
I look forward to discussing how we're going to achieve this- please contact me on 07736 375900 or e-mail me on aledroberts2011@hotmail.co.uk
