Dear Friend,
I would like to introduce myself as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Alyn & Deeside in the forthcoming Welsh Assembly election. The coming year will present us with many challenges and opportunities as Liberal Democrats, firstly with regards to maintaining a separate Welsh identity as a party but also the chance to show how Liberal Democrats are a serious player in national politics with a proven track record for helping families deal with the financial mess we have inherited. I am sure that with your help we can continue the progress made by local members in carrying the torch forward for liberal democracy in Alyn & Deeside.
I was born in Chester in 1983 and have lived in Hawarden since 2007, I have long standing roots in the area as my family have lived in Sandycroft since the Second World War. My political interests have been honed from an early age, in high school I was a member of student council for 3 years which involved representing students in changes to school policy and I represented Kingsway High in interschool debates. Following high school I attended Lancaster University, graduating in 2004 with a degree in Politics and International Relations, I specialised in US politics as I was eager to learn about how different political models worked. My time at university was also about learning new skills, with my partner I finished as Lancaster's Ballroom Dancing Champions in my final year whilst simultaneously running the society of 300 members. Since leaving Lancaster I have worked as a sales manager in retail in Broughton Retail Park, whilst hardly political the job has involved me spending the majority of my time meeting new people, addressing large groups and generally building my confidence.
I have been married for 7 years to my amazing wife Alexandra who I met in Lancaster and we have 2 beautiful daughters, Seren (3) and Georgia (18 months). Seren (and Georgia next year) attend playschool within the constituency. When we are not helping with the local Liberal Democrats, working or raising our family, Alexandra and I help teach Ballroom Dancing to all ages and abilities at a school based in Buckley, we have done this since 2002 when we were keen students of dance and in the years have made many friends in the area. Again, this has helped me develop myself to the person I am today by encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone, learn new skills and communicate a message to large groups of people.
The reasons I come to you today and ask for your endorsement are many. I feel that as Liberal Democrats we are facing questions not asked of us in a generation. We have to ensure that the message of fairness and honesty that defines us is heard. The Labour-Plaid coalition cannot be allowed to continue to waste money on NHS bureaucracy, or under-fund our children's education.
The challenges ahead are to make sure that the Liberal Democrats are the viable alternative to the status quo. I look forward to carrying our message of change into the election and to that end I would ask for your help. Any time or money you can donate can make the difference between a fairer future or the same tired politics of the past. We understand there are constraints on time, and budgets are tight but any help offered will be greatly received, if you can recruit a new member, find a spare hour to spread the message or donate money it will make a difference and for that, we would be grateful.
I am so proud to represent the local party and I look forward to meeting you.
Pete
