Flintshire Welsh Liberal Democrats have announced Michele Jones and Peter Williams, as their candidates for Delyn and Alyn & Deeside respectively for the Welsh Assembly elections on May 5th .
Michele Jones, who is a Town Councillor for Flint, said
"I am delighted and honoured to be chosen to contest this seat, and hope to show the residents of Delyn that there is a realistic alternative in the Welsh Liberal Democrats. Delyn is my home - I went to school here, and raised my family here. I believe the Labour-Plaid Assembly Government have failed the residents of Flintshire. Just look at the state of the Health service throughout Wales. Huge amounts of money wasted whilst waiting lists remain unacceptably high and ambulance waiting times are ludicrous."
Peter Williams lives in Hawarden with his wife and two young children is equally determined to fight for a better deal for residents
"As a parent, I am extremely concerned that the children of Wales receive £500 less per pupil investment in education than children in England. The failure of our current Labour-Plaid coalition Government to address this shortfall has resulted in falling educational standards in reading and mathematics. I plan to ensure that Wales' most treasured resource, its children, are at the centre of this campaign."
David Clayton, chair of the Flintshire local Party commented
"Michele and Peter's blend of experience and enthusiasm will be a breath of fresh air to the campaign in Flintshire. Both candidates are eager to press on with the campaigns for change in their respective constituencies. Furthermore they strongly support the YES campaigns for both the Welsh powers referendum in March and the AV referendum which takes place on the same day as the Assembly election."
Michele added
"Wales should have the ability to make laws that affect only the people of Wales in Wales. It is costly and time consuming for Cardiff to constantly have to ask Westminster for permission to change legislation on the issues for which the Assembly has responsibility. This does not mean independence for Wales, but merely full law making powers on the 20 issues currently devolved to Wales, such as Housing, Education and the NHS."
Pete is equally convinced that there needs to be a change to the voting system
"The current system is not reflective of how the UK votes and needs to be made fairer. We don't believe that a handful of votes in marginal constituencies should be valued more than any other vote and we will campaign strongly for the change in May.
It is also important that Welsh issues are not forgotten in the national political picture. As Welsh Liberal Democrat MPs demonstrated with their stance against tuition fees as a Party we won't just follow blindly, but are committed to being a strong voice for the people of Wales."
