New food waste scheme on the way
A MAJOR new scheme to bring down the amount of food waste being sent to landfill in Flintshire is to be tried out next year.
A third of Flintshire households will be given a special new bin for kitchen scraps which will be collected by the council every week.
The new project is being put in place in a bid to better the county's chances of meeting strict Welsh Assembly Government recycling targets.
Welsh Liberal Democrat Cllr Nancy Matthews, executive member for waste management, told an executive committee meeting at County Hall this week: "Households will be given a special bin for food waste, with special bags to make sure there is no mess.
"They can put any scraps or leftovers in there, as well as any out-of-date food, as long as it is removed from the packaging first, and collections will take place every week."
Flintshire must be recycling at least 12 per cent of its kitchen leftovers by 2012..
Cllr Matthews said work is also being done to develop a food waste treatment facility.
She said: "Most Welsh counties have already started doing it and we would be looking to start with a third of households in 2010 to help iron out any problems that may arise at first."
